Box Elder County School District provides driver education courses to high school students who attend or live within the boundaries of Box Elder County.
We offer a complete package for driver education that includes a Utah driver's education course, behind-the-wheel driving lessons, and road skills tests at your school in Box Elder County. Our professional instructors will guide you through the process of obtaining your driver's license.
1. Obtain Your Permit
It is reccommended that before you start drivers education, you obtain your learner's permit. To receive the permit, you must be at least 15 years old and pass the written test at the DLD. A permit can also be obtained during the class portion of drivers ed, however you must have your permit before you can sign up for the behind-the-wheel portion. **Beginning September 1, 2026, a permit will be required in order to register.
2. Complete the Driver Ed Classroom Portion
You will be required to complete 30 hours of classroom instruction and a mandatory parent/teen night.
3. Complete Your Behind-the-Wheel Lessons and Observations
Once you complete the classroom portion, you will be able to schedule your drive times online. The state requires students complete 12 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction which includes 6 hours of driving, with 6 hours of observation.
4. Take the Road Skills Test
After you have completed all your driving hours, one of our instructors or the DLD will give you the road test. You must pass the road skills test. If you fail the road test, you can pay for another road test with the high school or go to the DLD.
